Automotive Telematics
Telematics refer to a remote communication technology that combines telecommunication and informatics. Although there are differences in the definition of automotive telematics according to different automotive manufacturers, this technology generally works to provide a diversity of services such as navigation, fastest driving route (avoiding busy street), automotive diagnosis, GPS tracking, parking reservation, and automatic report on emergency events.
An automotive telematics is composed of GPS, GPRS/CDMA, and digital radio modules, as well as a high-performance multimedia processor and human-machine interface. In practice, digital radio frequency broadcasting and GPS are mostly implemented with an integrated module to achieve smaller size and simpler structure. It can provide the location of vehicles and navigation service based on the stored map through its GPS function, and also let drivers know about the real-time traffic conditions through digital radio module. The GPRS/CDMA module is used to build a communication with service providers to obtain updated map and voice information services, as well as automatically send an emergency message when involved in accidents. The high-performance multimedia processor is the core device of automotive telematics systems, responsible for processing all the incoming information and control instructions. The human-machine interface provides a variety of voice and visual information for drivers, and also receives drivers’ input through keypad, touch-screen and voice so that the multimedia processor can operate accordingly. The wide spread of automotive telematics technology would make it possible to deploy intelligent transportation system in modern cities. As a result the traffic efficiency could be increased, while the accidents, fuel consumption and environment pollution could be reduced.
