Portable Infotainment Devices
Benefitting from increase in processor speed, MEMS technology and advanced manufacturing process, portable entertainment & navigation systems have come a long way since their inception. These systems have evolved from those with single function (audio playback) to more complicated ones which boast diverse software such as navigation, smart OS, and mobile games to provide users a better experience. The main contributor behind this would be MEMS sensors which feature high precision, digital output and small footprint. Hence, it is now possible for designers to integrate different types of MEMS sensors into smarter systems with smaller size and less power consumption.
Accelerometers and gyroscopes are used to replace traditional push buttons on joysticks by detecting human bodies’ movement to control games, giving gamers a totally different experience. Atmosphere pressure sensors and electronic compasses are used in personal navigation systems. Capacitive touch sensors have recently replaced traditional keypads to produce smaller and easy-to-use devices. Ambient light sensor and optic proximity sensors enable displays to adjust brightness based on ambient light condition in order to provide a better readability and save battery power. Temperature sensors are used to monitor temperature of batteries to prevent over heated batteries explode. Most of these sensors have low power consumption and digital output and can be connected to processors directly without the need of analog front end and thereby making the complete system simple and energy efficient. Additionally, portable entertainment & navigation systems adopt microphone sensors to implement audio recording function and image sensors to provide camera function.
MEMS sensors are still going towards the target of microminiaturization, higher precision and lower power consumption, aiming to enable more functions on a single portable entertainment & navigation systems.
